The Wachau has been declared World Cultural Heritage. The World Cultural Heritage Committee has taken up the 36 kilometre stretch of the Danube Valley between Melk and Krems in Lower Austria as Cultural Landscape on the World Heritage list of the UNESCO.

"This short stretch of the Danube Valley - 36 km of a total of 2,800 km – is unique", so the UNESCO criterion. The Wachau is an outstanding example of a riverine landscape bordered by mountains in which material evidence of its long historical evolution has survived to a remarkable degree. Due to its diversified landscape, its important cultural landmarks and its typical small town ensemble, this stretch of the Danube Valley has been credited unique universal value .
